Fire Prevention Bureau

Captain Williamson has been with the department since August 8, 1983 and was promoted to Fire Marshal in 1997.
Lt. Stone has been with the Department since October 1982 and was promoted to Asst Fire Marshal in 2002.
Beverly has been with the Fire Prevention Division since July 2002. She handles all records upkeep and can provide information to you regarding your properties last inspections.
The Fire Prevention Bureau’s duties include:
New Construction Plan Review
    Through a thorough review of architectural drawings the Bureau ensures that all new construction incorporates those fire and life safety systems as required by the current building and fire codes.
New Business License Inspections
    These inspections ensure that as new businesses open they are safe for employees and customers and that changes in violation of the fire code do not take place.
Fire Inspections on new construction
    During the construction process inspections are made to ensure that fire and life safety systems are being installed properly and no deviation from the approved drawings is occurring.
Fire Inspections on existing structures
    Annual fire and life safety inspections are conducted to check for violations of the fire code and eliminate potential causes of unwanted fires.
Complaint Investigations
    Any and all complaints reported to this office are investigated and followed through on till compliance with Fire Code violations. Violations discovered not within our realm are reported to the proper authority.
Fire Code Enforcement
    Through a court summons process fire code violations are corrected for those occupancies failing to eliminate hazards and correct violations.
Fire Prevention & Safety Education
    Fire Safety Education programs are provided to school, daycares and adults to bring attention to the importance of Home safety, smoke detector installation and testing, practicing escape routes and other life saving information.
    In 2001 the Fire Prevention Bureau was fortunate in 2001 to receive Fire Act Grants funds for the purchase of a Community Safety House. The Community Safety House is a traveling classroom designed to teach children and adults fire safety, home safety, hurricane awareness, and tornado awareness.
Fire Investigation for Cause and Origin
    When the magnitude or seriousness of a fire prevents line personnel from determining cause and origin the Fire Prevention Bureau provides trained personnel to conduct more through and comprehensive investigations to determine the causes of the fire.
Assist Law Enforcement in Arson Investigations
    During the course of a fire investigation should evidence of possible arson arise, the Fire Prevention Bureau turns further investigation over to the Department of Public Safety Investigations Division and/or the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and assist their investigators as needed.
