City Appoints New Fire Chief
Garry Spain of Wendell, North Carolina has been hired as Fire Chief for the City of North Myrtle Beach. He will begin work on April 20th. He succeeds Tom Barstow, who served the city for 34 years before retiring on February 20th.
As Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Raleigh Fire Department, Spain oversaw strategic planning, fire station design and construction, purchasing of equipment and firefighting apparatus, and fleet maintenance.
City Appoints New Fire Marshal
Keith Williams has been appointed as the city’s Fire Marshal. Williams has 28 years of experience in the fire service. He and his wife, Kim, reside in North Myrtle Beach.
“We’re excited to have Keith Williams on board,” said Fire Chief Tom Barstow. “He has the background and skills to succeed in the position of Fire Marshal, and very importantly, he is a people person who naturally enjoys engaging with people in the community. We welcome Keith and his family to North Myrtle Beach.”
Chief Tom Barstow Announces His Retirement
North Myrtle Beach Fire Chief Tom Barstow has informed the city that he will retire February 20th, 2015.
Tom Barstow began as a Firefighter with the Department of Public Safety in 1980, after relocating from his hometown of Tonawanda, New York where he first started in the fire service. He was promoted to Shift Captain in 1982 and Training Captain in 1986. He was appointed as the city’s fourth Fire Chief in 1996.
In addition to his duties as Fire Chief, Tom also serves as the city’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. He was appointed President of the South Carolina Fire Chiefs Association for the 2014-2015 term. He is also a past president of the Horry Georgetown Fire Chief’s Association.
