June 2022 North Myrtle Beach Tree of the Month

Hawkins CCB

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A Chinese Cherry Blossom tree is named the tree of the month for June,  2022.

The North Myrtle Beach Tree Board made the announcement.

The beautiful specimen is at the home of Ken and Pam Hawkins in the Ocean Oaks Plantation community. When the Hawkins’ moved to North Myrtle Beach in the late 90s, they originally planned to purchase an awning for shade, but Pam learned more about the benefits of using ornamental trees and chose the Cherry Blossom instead.

The Cherry Blossom, along with other ornamental and shade trees, have been well-maintained since then on the Hawkins’ property.

The Hawkins chose the Cherry Blossom Tree because of its breathtaking color in spring, and because of historical significance.

According to the North Myrtle Beach Tree Board, this variety of tree originated in China but also thrives in Japan.  The Japanese people see it as representative of a fresh start and in 1912 they gifted over 3,000 Cherry Blossom trees to Washington, D.C. to restore friendship and political alliances.
