Armed Robbery

  • Try to never walk alone! The majority of violent crimes happen to a lone victim.
  • Deserted streets, dense woods, dark alleys, and parking lots at night are risky areas and can make you a prime target.
  • Always walk routes you know, and make sure they have lights at night.
  • Try to only carry cash you need; flashing large amounts is asking for trouble.
  • Never hitchhike! You don’t know what the person in the car is really after. And don’t pick up any hitchhikers; you never know who is getting into your car.
  • Always tell a friend or family member where you’re going and when you’ll return. If too much time has passed and they can’t reach you, they can call for help.
  • Be sure if you carry a cell phone it’s fully charged! A dead phone can’t make a call!
  • If you are out at night, try and park under a street lamp. Make sure to fully lock your doors when you leave the parking lot.
  • Walk with a purpose; be alert to your surroundings.
  • Ladies, keep your purse close to your side and make sure it has a zipper or a flap.
  • Start carrying a whistle or some sort of noise maker. Never be afraid to use it if the situation arises.
  • Having your keys in your hand as you walk to your car is handy; it lets you unlock the door faster and can make a weapon if need be.
  • If working or out late, walk with a friend or co-worker to your car.
  • If the car behind you keeps flashing their headlights, don’t pull over! Police officers will have red and blue flashing lights.
  • If you’re being followed, don’t drive home. Instead, drive to the nearest police station, fire station, city hall, or other public building. Try and get a look at the person and car following you.
  • If your car breaks down, pull over. Put up the hood, turn on the flashers, and tie a handkerchief to the antenna. Then get in the car, lock the doors, roll up the windows and turn the engine off. If you have a cell phone, call for help. If someone stops, roll down your window just enough to ask for them to call for help.
