Every year our Beach Patrol hosts winter and summer Junior Lifeguard camps that are open to any child age 9-15 who love to swim. Topics taught include water safety, First Aid, CPR, basic water rescue skills, and the ocean as an environment. Our Junior Guards are taught many of the same skills that our ocean lifeguards will learn, and upon turning 16 years old, some Junior Guards go on to train to be paid lifeguards! Junior Lifeguards also get to enjoy daily games, work in teams, and try fun physical challenges. Our summer program meets on the beach at Main St. on Tuesday and Thursday mornings June through August. Our winter camp meets at the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center and the NMB Aquatic and Fitness Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, January through March.
We want all participants in our program to be safe and have a fun time. If your child is new to the program, we ask that your child complete a swim test prior to the beginning of camp. Dates and times for the swim tests are included in the registration page. There is no need to do this swim test if your child has been on a swim team or has done our program before. It is highly recommended that all Junior Lifeguard families also familiarize themselves with our summer camp's inclement weather plan and daily check out process that are described on the camp's registration page.
Shadow a Real Ocean Lifeguard
Our Junior Lifeguards are taught by highly trained lifeguards and members of North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Beach Patrol officers. Your Junior Lifeguard can have a look into what Ocean Rescue is really like by shadowing one of these lifeguards. Junior Lifeguards may begin shadowing each summer after their second week of camp. Shadow days are Saturday only. Parents/guardians are asked to bring their Junior Lifeguard to our office inside the Beach Services Warehouse located at 1024 6th Ave South at 9am on any morning they want to shadow so that we can assign them to a lifeguard. We will then hand the Jr Lifeguard a paper with the lifeguard’s name, tower number, and tower location so that you can drive them to that location. Parents/Guardians are responsible for transporting their Jr Lifeguard to and from the beach and must pick them up by 11:30am.
